NEDO Attends Ceremony for Launch of Japan’s Largest Green Hydrogen Production and Utilization Demonstration Facility

October 15, 2025

On October 11, 2025, the Yamanashi Prefecture Consortium, supported by NEDO under its Green Innovation Fund Project, held a ceremony in Hokuto City, Yamanashi Prefecture, to mark the start of demonstration operations for Japan’s largest green hydrogen production and utilization facility.

Mr. MATSUMOTO Shintaro, Executive Director of NEDO, attended the ceremony, which included a ribbon-cutting event, equipment tours, and a reception.

Located adjacent to the Suntory Minami Alps Hakushu Water Plant, features a 16 MW polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) type water electrolyser, the largest of its kind in Japan.

When operated continuously throughout the year, the system is expected to produce approximately 2,200 tons of green hydrogen and reduce by CO2 emissions by around 16,000 tons. For hydrogen utilization, the consortium developed a high-efficiency, low-NOx hydrogen boiler and demonstration is being conducted to switch part of the heat source used at the natural water plant from fossil fuel (natural gas) to hydrogen. The project will also promote wider hydrogen use in surrounding areas.

In this project, an integrated system spanning from procurement of electricity renewable energy to steam production using green hydrogen will be demonstrated by the end of 2026, with the aim of deploying the system nationwide in the future in line with large-scale introduction of renewable energy. NEDO will continue to support the project toward its practical application.
