Project overview

Project period: FY2014 to FY2023, FY2021 budget: JPY 1.98 billion

The goal of this project is to create and develop technology-based startups, stimulate the economy, and create new industries/jobs through a consistent and policy-based process ranging from the discovery to the commercialization of technology seeds possessed by Japanese companies, universities, research institutes, and other organizations.

Implementation item 1: NEDO Technology Commercialization Program (TCP)

To discover entrepreneur candidates, NEDO will provide training to support the creation of business plans, hold business plan (pitch) competitions, and conduct related activities.

Implementation item 2: NEDO Entrepreneurs Program (NEP)

After making open calls and selecting entrepreneur candidates, NEDO will conduct commercialization feasibility studies, including the creation of business plans.

Implementation item 3: Commercialization support for Seed-stage Technology-based Startups (called STSs below)

NEDO will certify venture capital firms, seed accelerators, and other parties within and outside Japan (called VCs below) that support technology-based startups and will implement development subsidies for practical applications by STSs that receive investments from VCs.

Implementation item 4: Commercialization support through the promotion of translational research development (Collaboration with Research Institute, called CRI below)

NEDO will make an open call for proposals from technology-based startups engaged in joint research or similar pursuits with translational research institutes and then conduct reviews to make decisions regarding the granting of subsidies.

Implementation item 5: Commercialization support for startups cooperating with other companies (Startups in Corporate Alliance, called SCA below)

NEDO will make an open call for proposals from technology-based startups engaged in joint research or similar pursuits with project companies and then conduct reviews to make decisions regarding the granting of subsidies.

Implementation item 6: Program to develop highly specialized human resources to support the growth of startups (Technology Startup Supporters Academy, called SSA below)

NEDO will train human resources that can support the growth of technology-based startups with wide-ranging knowledge and advanced expertise.
