Cross-ministerial Strategic Innovation Promotion Program (SIP)

These Programs are promoted in collaboration with the Cabinet Office, Related Ministries and Agencies. This site summarizes the SIP's research and development efforts and event information.

Overview of the SIP

The SIP is a newly established program managed by the Japanese Council for Science, Technology and Innovation. For this program, the Council provides management oversight beyond the frameworks of government ministries and traditional disciplines to realize greater scientific and technological innovation.

The SIP has been promoting 11 themes since 2014 (Cyber-security for Critical infrastructure since 2015) (First Phase) and newly 12 themes since 2018 (Second Phase) that address the most important social problems facing Japan, as well as contribute to the resurgence of the Japanese economy. Each research program is led by one of experienced and talented program directors (PDs) who are responsible for end-to-end focused research and development, facilitating coordination among government, industry and academic entities. These directors have been charged with guiding their projects from basic research to practical application and commercialization, and ultimately to a clear exit strategy.

NEDO is managing in 5 themes out of the 11 themes at First Phase, and in 4 themes out of the 12 themes at Second Phase. In order for PD to promote the program smoothly, NEDO support the operation of the program as a management corporation, such as research and development progress management, alone or jointly with other organizations.
