February 25, 2020

The Moonshot Research and Development Program has been promoted by the Cabinet Office in collaboration with relevant government ministries, agencies, and organizations. This page provides information on research and development activities, events, and calls for proposals being carried out by NEDO regarding the program.

Outline of Moonshot Research and Development

With the Moonshot Research and Development Program, NEDO is driving high-risk, high-impact research and development toward ambitious and attractive targets (Moonshot targets) to solve issues facing society in the future based on research and development concepts set by Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) to achieve Moonshot targets.

The Cabinet Office designed the Moonshot Research and Development Program to stimulate disruptive innovation in Japan, implementing challenging research and development based on ideas that are not just extensions of conventional technology.

In this program, the Council for Science, Technology and Innovation will determine Moonshot targets, and the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology and METI will create the research and development concepts through which challenging research and development will be implemented. NEDO and the Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST) are responsible for carrying out the operation of the Moonshot Research and Development Program with multi-year funding for ambitious research and development.
