「ARPA-E and NEDO Workshop on Sharing Knowledge and Discussing Future Collaboration」の開催報告

NEDOは、2023年7月12日（水）、Advanced Research Projects Agency Energy（ARPA-E）と共に、ワシントンD.C.で「ARPA-E and NEDO Workshop on Sharing Knowledge and Discussing Future Collaboration」を開催しました。本ワークショップでは、カーボンニュートラルに向けた相互の事業概要を共有した上で、共通する重点技術分野について戦略・事業内容・課題について意見交換を行いました。また、実施主体者であるPD（Program Director）との直接交流を通じて、今後の日米の連携分野を模索しました。さらに、ARPA-E Wang長官とTSC岸本センター長の対談も行い、サプライチェーンの今後の見通しやカーボンニュートラルに向けた資金提供機関の役割等について議論しました。

Session 1. Renewable Energy, Power Systems, and Batteries Including Energy Storage
ARPA-E: Dr. Laurent Pilon, Program Director (Lead) and another person	・Both explained ongoing programs / projects. ・The discussion was focused on grid management and long-duration energy storage in preparation for the expansion of renewable energy introduction. Both agreed to continue discussing the ways to solve common issues of grid congestion management (including locational marginal pricing) and long-duration energy storage in these two fields.

Session 2. Industrial Decarbonization
ARPA-E: Dr. Jenifer Shafer, Program Director (Lead) and another person	・Agreed to collaborate on accounting methods ・Agreed to explore potential for collaboration on CCS demonstration projects. ・Agreed to regularly share information on the status of early-stage technology deliberations. This includes holding information workshops and consideration of participation.

Session 3. Power Electronics for Resilient Power Grid

Session 4. Blue Carbon
ARPA-E: Dr. Simon Freeman, Program Director	・Set up a forum for discussion among project participants on methods for measuring and evaluating CO₂ fixation ・Set up a forum for discussion among project implementers on how to cultivate macroalgae throughout the year ・The Japanese side is considering how to dispose of the residue, and plans to exchange opinions. ・Introduced Japanese researchers and a plan to match them

Closing Session
NEDO: Takashi Wada, Executive Director for foreign affairs	・Expressed his gratitude for holding the workshop and remarked on the importance of continuing discussions between ARPA-E and NEDO.
ARPA-E: Shane Kosinski, Deputy Director for Operations	・Expressed his opinion that NEDO and ARPA-E have very similar missions and that if we can act together, we can create a greater impact.

【総評】

午前のセッションでは、冒頭、Wang長官からARPA-Eの概要・実施中のプロジェクト例についての紹介とともに、特に同盟国・友好国との連携プロジェクトを増やしていく重要性等についての話があり、岸本センター長からも同様にNEDOやTSCにおける事業の紹介、ワシントン・SVの両事務所長からNEDOで実施している国際実証事業等についての紹介を行いました。続けて、4つの分野（再エネ・産業脱炭素化・パワエレ・ブルーカーボン）について、ARPA-E・NEDOそれぞれ分野毎の取組の概要が示されました。

午後の分野別個別セッションでは、4分野に分かれて、相互の取組の理解や具体的なコラボレーションの可能性についての議論を行い、具体的な連携ポイント案がそれぞれの分野で示され、過去ARPA-Eとの間で実施してきた意見交換会と比べても革新的な会となりました。

今回の取り組みのフォローアップを実施するとともに、今後も相互交流を深め、日米の連携分野の議論を進めていきます。
